Sailors' Snug Harbor was founded in 1833 as a retirement home for seamen. Though is grew over the following century, the dwindling number of seamen retirees made the institutions continuation too expensive and it was closed, the remaining residents moved to North Carolina.

The City of New York purchased the run-down property in 1973. It was converted into the cultural center you see here, today. Snug Harbor is the largest such architectural preservation project in the United States.

Snug Harbor is now the home of many cultural institutions such as the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the Staten Island Children's Museum, the Art Lab School and the John A. Noble Collection. Snug Harbor provides a wide array of educational programs for K-12 students and adults.

From the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, take the #40 bus to Snug Harbor Road (about 2 miles). From there it is but a very brief walk to the Main Gate.
