ATTRACTIONS

Rockefeller Center
630 5th Avenue
New York NY
212-332-3400

The man had a dream. Bring together the art of New York City to midtown Manhattan and create an oasis to be enjoyed by all. Paintings, sculpture, opera and symphony, even the means to transmit the audible art to the outside world - via radio. This was the Fabulous Twenties. The War to End All Wars was won and it seemed to be an absolutely carefree world.

Then the Great Depression hit and most dreams evaporated in that instant of doom. But that just spurred this man forward. Born rich, immune to the curse of the Depression, he pushed forward. John D Rockefeller, Jr. was determined and Rockefeller Center, the largest private building enterprise ever achieved in the United States, is the result.

Fourteen buildings and a half dozen gardens (four of which are roof-top gardens), an underground network of tunnels with shops and restaurants (even a subway station) - an underground city within the city form an oasis which has been a pleasure to millions of people.

The art is here but the opera didn't quite make it. More than 30 of our greatest artists contributed over 100 of their major works. Tours may be arranged, conducted by NBC- trained pages - or you may go to their web site and take a 'virtual tour'. This is such a pleasurable, relaxing place it almost hurts to leave it.
