Brooklyn has its Coney Island, the Queens has Rockaway Beach - over seven miles of prime beachfront for swimmers, beach strollers and sun bathers. But Rockaway has been far more than just an in-city recreational beach oasis: up the beach is Fort Tilden and Naval Air Station. Dating back to World War I, this was part of the American Eastern Coast Defense Network and now incorporated into the Gateway National Recreation Area of the National Park Service. Once upon a time, Rockaway Beach was an attempt to compete with Coney Island as an amusement park and recreational complex of 'eateries' and 'funeries'. A sequence of roller coasters, each bigger and scarier, thrilled hundreds of thousands. But the inviting sands of the great beach have won the battle. So if you are in search of clean, quiet recreation or looking for a glimpse into history, Rockaway Beach welcomes you.
