It all started in December of 1896 when New York's new aquarium opened its doors in downtown Manhattan (in the area now known as Battery Park). It wasn't great but it was the only sea life nebue in town. Then, because of the impending construction of a bridge to Brooklyn, the sea life was moved to the Bronx Zoo where they remained until the mid 1950s when the new Aquarium opened its doors on a new 14 acre site on Coney Island in Brooklyn.

What a difference! Now there was room for emulated marine environments as well as the new marine research facilities. Today you can learn all about seals, sea lions, penguins, sea otters, etc., at their 300-foot recreation of a rocky Pacific coastal habitat. Sea life can be viewed from below the water line as well as above.

You can view the Beluga Whales through the huge aquarium windows. You can go eyeball to eyeball with 400+ pound sharks, or watch the stingrays and other marine life. There are now thousands of specimens on view.

The Aquarium has an extensive repertoir of family-oriented programs throughout the year. For most, there is no admission fee but reservations are required.

Some rules which are strictly enforced: no pets (except properly harnessed guide dogs), radios, bikes, rollerblades or skateboards and smoking is absolutely prohibited anywhere on the grounds.
