a crown jewel in the setting of this lovely park, the Cloisters is a
nicely constructed replica of a medieval French cloisters. A branch of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cloisters houses a renown collection of illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, metalwork, enamels, ivories, and tapestries.
In all, some five thousand works of art from medieval
Europe (dating from about A.D. 800 though mainly twelfth through fifteenth
century works) can be viewed here in this most realistic setting.
The Cloisters also features gardens
which have been planted according to horticultural information found in medieval treatises and poetry, garden documents and
herbals.*

Directions:
If visiting the
Cloisters on a combination pass from the main museum at 83rd and Madison,
take the M4 bus to its last stop (Fort Tryon Park). You could also take
the A train (subway) to 190th Street, take the elevator and walk north
along Margaret Corbin Drive to the park (about ten minute walk).
By auto, take the
Henry Hudson Parkway ("Joe DiMaggio Hwy") northbound from the
George Washington Bridge and take fist exit (Fort Tryon Park). If
southbound, you have to go past the Park to exit 14/15, exit than get back
on the northbound side of the Parkway and exit as directed, above.
