Central Park
Central Park is a slice of green in the center of Manhattan between 5th and 8th Avenues and extending from 110th St to 59th St.

New York's 843 acre Central Park is almost as famous as New York's Times Square. Just why should a park be so famous? Because it is big? Partly. Because of all the beautiful statuary in the park? Partly? Because of all the sports activities, many of international fame? Partly. Because of the concerts, many of international fame? Partly.

Central Park is the only park in the world which regularly accommodates some quarter of a million people weekend after weekend in the summers. This is a park of the people and for the people and it was meant to be that way from it very inception.

There are many excellent histories of Central Park and most are fascinating reading. Example: Central Park was the center of bitter political contention in the Nineteenth Century, taken over by the State of New York and finally returned to the control of New York City. Read how the Park was finally saved and actions initiated to assure the original purpose of the Park would be fulfilled.

The Central Park Conservancy has made available one of the better web sites citing much of this history and including descriptions of the artifacts and facilities of the Park.
