| Brooklyn
Academy of Music (BAM), is America’s oldest, operating, performing arts
center. BAM's first performance was in 1861 at the start of the American
Civil War. In addition to 'normal' performances, BAM has frequently been
immersed in raising money for community causes - including war relief.
Such notables as Enrico Caruso, Isadora Duncan, and Arthur Toscanini, Paul
Robeson, Lili Pons have graced BAM's stage. It is the home of the Brooklyn
Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the more forward looking orchestras in the
country.
BAM produces two free outdoor
annual concerts series each summer:
- BAM Rhythm & Blues
Festival at Metrotech Center in Downtown Brooklyn
- BAM/City Parks Foundation
Concerts in the Parks series in parks across New York City

BAM
and innovation are synonymous. To quote a statement in a piece of BAM
literature, "... (BAM) is dedicated to the presentation of
outstanding American and international contemporary performance with an
emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration." Classical productions
are frequently re-staged resulting in very different impressions from the
accustomed.
BAM has taken another
leap beyond the conventional. Collaborations with high tech companies in
the area provide BAM students with unsurpassed opportunities to learn the
latest techniques in creating and presenting various art forms. A recent
collaboration with Lucent Technologies, for example, created the Arts in
Multimedia Project (see bell-labs.com)
