| Brooklyn
may well be the best illustration in the world of the melding a a wide
range of ethnic groups and cultures. The Brooklyn Center for the
Performing Arts, founded in the mid 1950s, has brought to Brooklyn and,
indeed, the whole of New York, a fertile group of planned facilities
where, "... the hard-working EveryMan would be able to experience the
great artists in every discipline and at prices that were
affordable." More than that, it has made available to these
communities the opportunity to participate as artists and performers.
Centerpiece of the center is
the 2400 seat Walt Whitman Theatre with its 'thrust stage' providing a
very intimate bond between performers and audience. Greats such as
Leontyne Price, Zubin Mehta, The Joffrey Ballet, Paul Taylor Dance
Company, Marilyn Horne, Itzhak Perlman, Peter Martins, Luciano Pavarotti,
Dame Joan Sutherland and Edward Villella from the classical world, to Tony
Bennett, Pearl Bailey, Alan King, Linda Ronstadt, Arlo Guthrie, The Beach
Boys, Victor Borge and Santana from the 'popular' world have delighted
thousands and thousands of New Yorkers, - and at popular prices! |
The
Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts isn't just a stage for the
presentation of the greats of the world. It is a community center. Hosting
community functions and events with the assistance of the Center's
professional staff has helped unite the communities and create a positive
atmosphere when problems, like the recent September 11th disaster, bring
so much sorrow and grief. Events, such as variety shows, dance recitals,
convocations, NYC Fire and Police Academy graduations, high school
graduations, bring the communities together and help create a productive
pride; this is our home.
The Brooklyn Center for the
Performing Arts currently has scheduled performance series and community
events including:
- Broadway Sundays
- Brooklyn Center Cinema
- Caribbean Celebration
- Community Showcase
- Family Fun
- Jewish Gems
- Musical Masters
- Sensational Saturdays
- World of Dance
