than just another of the many New York theatres, the Apollo is an
institution - in fact, it is a national landmark by act of Congress. The
building, and the original Apollo Theatre, date back to 1913. Then, blacks
could be on the stage but not in the audience. But their jazz, soul music
and rock and roll plus gut-splitting comedy became one of New York's major
attractions and remained so for over 80 years. A series of business
failures killed it for awhile but it was destined to come back to life! |
Duke Ellington,
Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Nat “King” Cole, Lionel Hampton and Sammy Davis, Jr
all had roots here. Restored in 1981, it is, again, a showcase of top
entertainment and a tourist magnet. Today we are privileged to have
entertainers as Sunshine Anderson, Marc Curry, Donnie McClurkin, Blu Cantrell, Alicia Keys and Brian McKnight.
