Reno
|
| When Reno began could be a matter of debate; the building of a bridge across the Truckee River easing communication between the gold mines and the California trail over Donner Summit. Or 1928 when Reno announced itself as "The Biggest Little City in the World" when they celebrated the completion of a paved 2-lane road over the Summit and first lit the 'Reno' arch over Virginia Street and, thus, became the unofficial greeting to visitors arriving by train. Or 1978 when the first of the high-rise casinos, then the MGM Grand Hotel, opened its doors and became the unofficial greeting to visitors arriving by air. | The
original 'Reno' arch over Virginia Street has been replaced by a much
glitzier version. The MGM Grand is not the Hilton but Reno is still Reno.
Perhaps Las Vegas has run away in size and numbers of high-rise casinos,
Reno's unique character makes it the favorite playground of millions of
repeat visitors. While gaming is the major industry, there are many other
things to do - especially for family-oriented visitors. And the hotels
exude a friendly spirit that makes a visitor feel like a long-time
resident. Okay, its the people. Enjoy the casinos - but check out the other attractions, too. |
