Hattiesburg

Home of the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg's success, today, is primarily the result of an eye to the future and a generous touch of wisdom. The city started as a lumbering center (it is in the middle of one of the finest stands of longleaf pine which was a major industry in Mississippi) but the city fathers spurred growth in a wide variety of industries which has enabled this community to stay economically sound.

Their Lake Terrace Convention Center is state of the art and well booked. Check their schedule (calendar) - you may find an event of prime interest to you.

There are more than a dozen public and private golf courses in the immediate vicinity - and you don't need orange golf balls here in the winter. There is also great year-round camping, hiking, fishing and canoeing, - and hunting in season.

For the history buffs, Hattiesburg has four distinct Historic Districts including one of the largest, most intact historic districts in southeast Mississippi, encompassing 115 acres and featuring a variety of architectural styles dated between 1884 and 1930.
