Originally built in 1921 by the South's theatre magnate, Arthur Lucas, its Italian Renaissance exterior and ornate Italianate interior set it apart from most other theatres of the period. Eventually abandoned, it fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition. Because of the significance of its architecture and the opulent interior, it was saved, restored and reopened in December of 2000. It now hosts a range of venues of the performing arts including many of

The Savannah Civic Center actually contains:
- Johnny Mercer Theatre with 2,500 seats - home of the Savannah Symphony
- M L King, Jr Arena - which accommodates sporting events, ice shows to the annual appearance of the Ringling Brothers Circus
- Ballroom - a 48x125 foot (main room) with a 22x42 foot permanent dance floor
- Meeting Rooms - ten of varying sizes to accommodate most any function
