| Cañon
City is a small community on US-50 about 38 miles west of Pueblo - or 48
miles south of Colorado Springs (via CO-115). Colorado has a lot of small
communities harboring big attractions; Cañon City is such a community. Buckskin Joe Frontier
Town and Railway is a lively, fully decked-out western town sufficiently
authentic to have been used as filming sites for several major productions
(e.g., The Cowboys, Cat Ballou, and The Sacketts). Complete with live street shows and
inevitable western gunfights, great musical entertainment, horse-drawn trolley
rides and even horseback riding, they seem to cover all the bases. The
Royal Gorge Railroad is extremely popular and serves frequent guests from
Colorado Springs. After all, it is less than an hour away. As they say,
step back in time and step up in excitement. |
Buckskin Joes is open 9a
- 6p daily May through September. Adults are $16 and kids $14. For more
information, phone 719-275-5149
or visit their web site at www.buckskinjoes.com. Also in the vicinity of
Cañon
City is the Royal Gorge, Park and Bridge. While not exactly the Grand
Canyon in sheer size, you just might find it more enjoyable. If you take a
ride on the The Royal Gorge Railroad (see above) you will have a very good
view as the route takes you to the upper rim of the gorge. The train runs
from May through September. A ride on the little train is $26.96 for
adults and $16.50 for the kids. It takes about a half hour. For more
information, phone 303-569-1041,
or visit their web site at www.royalgorgebridge.com. |
